Advanced Design Lab
In Advanced Design Lab, artists and engineers team up to brainstorm designs, evaluate regulations, and build prototypes with outside companies. I have had the pleasure of participating in two different projects, one with Universal Studios Creative, and one with Orlando Utilities Commission.
Studio Art
As an art student, I took three different types of classes: sculpture, design, and drawing. Each taught different skills and techniques, and tested the boundaries of my creativity in different ways. We studied different artists, and learned the principles of line, shape, volume, color theory, and more.
In addition to learning about things like shape, line, and color theory, these courses taught me different techniques that would be valuable in the future. Being able to adapt everyday objects into my pieces, and learning how to make the most from the available 3D printers and laser cutting machines made building the prototypes for Advanced Design Lab a much more streamlined process. While these projects were mostly independent, we also learned how to leverage each other’s experiences to get tips and tricks on how to improve our pieces. For example, technical drawing was not one of my strengths, so my classmates gave me advice on how to work around that particular weakness. Conversely, I was very good at adapting 3D forms into 2D shapes that could be cut with the laser cutter, so I assisted my classmates with that aspect of their projects.
