My name is Coral Nimz and I will be graduating from the University of Central Florida (UCF) in May 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a minor in Studio Art. After graduation, my goal is to enter the work force where I can contribute my skills and creativity as a data analyst. My passion for data and data analytics stems from my love for math and the arts, which I’ve found to be present in near equal parts in this field. Mathematical and statistical analyses allow you to draw conclusions from numbers, and artistic and informative visualizations make sharing those conclusions possible. Both in and out of the classroom I’ve sought to improve myself by building a skillset that includes analysis and problem solving, project management, and teamwork and communication. Throughout my academic career, I have strived to achieve a well-rounded education, which has given me the ability to transfer and apply my skillset to new and challenging situations.
Throughout my portfolio, I highlight several of my most influential and valuable experiences, and the skills that I have gained from them.
The areas of focus that I chose to expand on are my experiences in professional settings, my research projects, and my art portfolio. These make up a significant and valuable portion of my undergraduate experience, and helped form a foundation upon which I will grow. For example, during my Advanced Design Lab courses, I learned how to manage projects and work effectively in large teams. This skill was very useful when I interned with the Department of Homeland Security, and I was able to develop that skill further but practicing it in a highly professional setting. This level of professionalism was crucial during my Mathematical Biology undergraduate research, where we were required to give a filmed presentation of our project that would be submitted for a competition as well as shared with our international contact. Beyond my educational and professional goals, I have worked to better my community through volunteerism and social justice advocacy. In addition to donating my time to local low-income, underperforming schools, I am also in the process of co-founding Women in Mathematics - a student organization that will encourage girls of all ages to pursue interest in mathematics, and to support the women in STEM already at UCF.
In my free time, I’ve sought to participate in the UCF and Orlando community as much as possible, and to help others make this community their home. I assisted at the UCF Honors Orientation, where I helped incoming honors students acclimate to college life, I joined the UCF Men’s Club Rowing team where I led several boats to victory as a coxswain, and I have attended countless art and performance events at UCF and in Orlando.
I am fortunate to have had many opportunities to grow, and I hope to leverage every lesson that I've learned to better myself, my future employer, and my community.
More about my experiences, certifications, and recognition can be found in my resume.
Personal "Elevator Pitch"
I had the opportunity to film the video below thanks to my involvement with the Knights of Distinction program. The purpose was to record an extended “elevator pitch,” or a short description of who I am and what my goals are.
